Week 15- Interactions between the 3 Levels

I picked Iphone as an example of industrial design which demonstrates all three levels (representational, abstract, and symbolic) of visual design communication and reception. Iphone functions more like handy size of notebook and plus cellular phone. The first level, representational, is presented in its actual screen of notebook, but a small version. The small screen that people touch to play music, to call, to write something, and to capture some pictures. The role of the screen plays in the whole is to demonstrate through visual information how this object functions; it delivers lots of information through the applications that you download. In the image, a small electronic device delivers multiple messages through its representational level. This representational of Iphone provide both a view of the object and an information about a variety of ways of seeing.

In this image, abstraction is present in the several parts of the Iphone. In visual communication, abstraction can be seen as a simplification toward distilled meaning. Like the example above, abstractions may place emphasis on certain parts of a representational photo shoots such as the pattern of they organized its functions in the phone abstractly. Iphone is designed in simplest form, but it has lots of functions we see through the level of abstraction. The role of abstraction in this image is the way it added specific abstracted form of switches. The impact it has on the users is that people perform its functions with those key buttons.

The symbolic level is also presented in this image of Apple company. Symbolism is also a form of simplification of visual messages. This famous image of "apple" is symbolic and iconic of the Apple and it values the Iphone. Most people recognize it as a symbol of Apple. The icon has a role in our society because almost everybody owns Iphone where it is impacted on the value of technology in twentieth century. Also, this symbol can be arranged in an abstract form which conveys additional information.

Week 14 Exercise: Representational, Abstract, Symbolic.

One of three levels, representational is what we see and recognize from environment and experience. In this image,  a tree-like form of book shelve express visual message from our basic information of "tree," which has many of bunches from the body of tree.  A tree can be identified through a general shape, linear, and its detailed characteristics.  Therefore, the designer of this book shelve express its tree-like bunches that can be functional. The idea of representational of tree form of book shelve operate its functional use of tree itself.

This is an example of non-objective abstraction.  I found this image as a abstraction of design tool. These abstracted the basic visual elements of design tools are also a process of abstraction which means it is important to understand of its visual message from the abstracted structure of tools in this image. Therefore, it communicates with the realistic, recognizable information that the viewers modify or recall their visual information they already have. These abstracted form of tools give a chance to the thinking of the designer and help in communicating.

This is an example of symbolism that I found the Louvre Museum in France. As soon as I see the museum, I recall the shape of pyramid. I believe it fits in one of the levels, symbolism because almost everyone who see this museum, they are going to recall the pyramid.  The architects built the pyramid at the entrance of the museum as a symbolism of the Louvre Museum. This triangle shape of pyramid can be simplified picture to a most reliable system of attached meaning of picturing of the museum itself because pyramid can reinforce visual message of the museum and it can communicates with the viewers in many ways.

week 12- Visual Techniques

Symmetry, balance, stasis, depth, and irregularity.

Depth, consistency, sequentiality,symmetry, and balance.

From these two designs, both of the designs are visually balanced and also has a depth visual technique. Both designs, the bookshelf and chair have a symmetrical structure that gives it balanced on both side of the bookshelf. On the bookshelf, the technique of irregularity is seen in a way that the designer emphasizes the unusual and unexpected to plan as a bookshelf plus chair. Instead of having extra shelves, the designer created a reading chair with spaces. Another technique, stasis is also represented in the bookshelf where it has motionless and functions as a reading chair. The depth visual technique is seen in both of the design that they have a three dimensional furniture structure where they use the spaces with keeping books or extra different size of chairs. The bottom chair design example has a sequentiality technique where it involves a series of chairs in a sequential pattern, so the chair suggests a organization of itself. After comparing and contrasting the differing results between the two design works produced by the different combination of techniques, both of design works are functional and useful in a way that they have saved and developed  a extra spaces. Every time, when I see these kinds of functional and useful design works, my inspiration and passion in this field grow faster than ever.

Week 11- CONTRAST

From this image, the use of contrast demonstrates in a successful design with the chair. The simple dark brown wood of the top of the chair make contrast with the zigzag shape of legs, especially there is severe angularity to sweeping curves in the pieces. At this interesting point, the simple wood make a contrast with a solid range of material. The contrasting in between materials that the designer create a successful design of chair itself, which is simple and unique where those two unbalance material bring out a success in design.

From this wall clock, the design of this clock is somehow confusing and not easy to read the time. This contrast of mirror with the function of the clock design is a failure because it is more likely to use in function of mirror instead of read a time. It does create a unique and interesting design of wall clock, but when people actually see the time, they are more likely see their face first and then figure out the time, so this design turns out not to be functional despite of the purpose of the designer's use of materials. Rather than see this object in successful design of contrasting the materials or functions, this serves only as a visual statement of design itself or as a decoration. Overall, this object is failure in contrast with the material and its functionality.

Motion & Movement

This image of furniture that has visual mode that allows an implied sense of motion by its waving design. It features motion sensor and RGB LEDs, the lounge chair reacts to touch and movement ofthe user through a different light and color patterns display. Its shape of design gives a sense of movement where some of curve waves look like they are moving from left to right. Even though, the material of this lounge chair, glass, does not create for motion or movement design, the shape allows to   communicate with motion that operating in this in this design.

This is "one of Valve's most renowned character design theories, evident in all recent multiplayer games from Team Fortress to Left 4 Dead." I found a sense of motion that operating in this character design where each figure as a shape creates their direction of movement. The designer try to emphasize the each figure has form of the motion that can be created with the distinction of human shape. All the figures create a illusion in way that they look like they are in motion, walking toward each other.

I really like this image of Kinetic sculpture in BMW Museum.  It says, "the Kinetic Sculpture is a metaphorical translation of the from-finding process in design." It consists of 714 spheres of metal balls that are hanging with a thin wired from the ceiling. All the metal balls hold in the position where they create a specific design (shapes). Once they position at specific shape, the metal balls hold the position, but they still are operating a sense of motion that they are moving around realistically.

Depth/Size Perception

This simple and modern design of furniture is related to my interest in industrial design which demonstrates some materials in the lecture. I found this image of table that designing physical space. This table and chairs emphasis on the human subject in the space with actual objects (table and chairs). This is also explains actual physical space that navigating its use of space. For example, the chairs can hide under the table and it creates more spaces when it is not in use which creates a new territory. I believe the designer try to interpret both actual space and practical needs of space itself which is related to this week's materials from the class. Its accessibility of space made from actual object (table and chair) provides the metaphor of for virtual space. This simplest and modernest furniture tells a lot of design concepts that has tangible product design which operates in ACTUAL space.

Tone & Color

This is a photo of Gentoo concept car. I picked this image for this week's exercise because it shows several elements that are related to Dondis basic elements of visual communication. The tone is operating in this image where it has lightness on the top of the car. Its egg shape of the car is visualized in tone because the light goes around the car and it is reflected by shiny surface, falls on the around the shape that have relative lightness and darkness. At the same time, one of the Dondis elements, shape, is interacting with the tone of the car. The car's wheel, which is circle shape, represents endlessness and protection of the car's concept. Also, the wheel has same size of smaller circles inside of a big circle which creates the feelings of the car could drive faster and faster.

The color is also operating in this concept car. Although, they use a few colors, it creates a cute, simple, and attractive car with only orange, white and black colors. It is not easy to recognize that it is a car because of the shape does not look like a normal car concept, but the color they used with the car bring the idea of new future car. Because the colors themselves create its source of fundamental. I believe that this color is interacting with texture element from Dondis. Once, the colors are expressed with the car, the texture need to recognize next. It is important that the color and one of the elements, texture, draw my eyes to figure out the value of the products.
